Bachchan: It's time for Hollywood to head to Bollywood

By Henry Smith for CNN | March 10, 2010
One of India's most famous actors has thrown down a challenge for Hollywood celebrities to perform in more Bollywood productions in Asia. Abhishek Bachchan told CNN's Becky Anderson that he believes the world is waking up to the importance of Bollywood in the west and that more Hollywood actors will migrate east. "The lines are blurring, there's a lot of exchange in terms of talent -- technical as well as acting between European, British, American and Indian cinema," Bachchan said on Connect the World.

Shah Rukh Khan: Bollywood cricket boss takes the cheers and the jeers

Shah Rukh Khan, the Bollywood superstar, has become more than a little accustomed to being adored by millions. "I don't want to be anonymous... I'm very honest about that. I love being recognized, I love people liking me, I love the fact that people scream when I go out. I think I'll miss all that when it's taken away," he told CNN. But earlier this year comments by Khan, the owner of the Indian Premier League cricket team Kolkata Knight Riders, caused a storm of controversy and attention he didn't want.

Hollywood, Bollywood sign cooperation pact

By Michael Martinez and Andreena Narayan, CNN | November 11, 2010
Hollywood and India's Bollywood have signed a historic cooperation pact that will have the world's two leading film industries working together in areas from production to distribution to content protection. Leaders from the two industries met in Hollywood this week for a two-day session to discuss economic development and collaboration. Signing an official pact at Paramount Pictures Studios in Hollywood, representatives from the two entertainment powerhouses declared to develop and strengthen motion picture production, distribution, technology, content protection and commercial cooperation, according to a release issued by the Motion Picture Association of America.

The secret behind Bollywood's success

By Sara Sidner, CNN | April 8, 2011
Bollywood has a unique formula for success that the world outside of India is largely unaware of. There's a whole industry of people who prop up Indian cinema and help make Bollywood's famous song and dance routines a hit. These so-called "playback singers" masterfully sing the songs. But you won't see them because on screen, they are replaced by actors who lip-synch the tunes. It's a well-established technique, which employs about 200 people. "Because it's such an integral part of the films and because the songs are such an integral part of story telling they've evolved specialists," composer and playback singer Vishal Dadlani said.

Coming up on Icon: Bollywood movies

What is it about Bollywood movies that has managed to enchant a nation? Icon heads to Mumbai, the heart of the Hindi film industry, to find out. We talk to legendary choreographer, Farah Khan, about the power of dance and join her in rehearsals for her upcoming movie. Revered like no other, and once dubbed 'the Angry Young man' we catch up with arguably the most famous actor in the business, Amitabh Bachchan, to talk about the melodrama, the morality and the music... What makes a tune a Bollywood hit?

Bollywood poster painters face extinction in digital age

By Laura Allsop and Lianne Turner, CNN | June 23, 2011
For decades, Bollywood film releases were accompanied by beautiful painted posters that decorated city streets all over India. Heroic princesses, noble maharajahs and dastardly criminals, painted larger than life by artists and craftsmen in vivid colors, graced billboards towering often fifty feet high. But where Mumbai, Bollywood's home town, used to have 300 such poster painters, now there remain only a handful. One of them is Sheikh Rehman, a poster painter for 54 years who has witnessed his trade dying out thanks to cheaper and quicker digital production.

Amitabh Bachchan reveals the secret of Bollywood's success

By Susannah Palk and Lianne Turner, CNN | June 29, 2011
It's an extraordinary concoction of dashing heroes, evil villains, insurmountable obstacles and star-crossed lovers. Welcome to the world of Bollywood, Mumbai's film industry, where anything can happen, so long as there's a happy ending and lots of singing and dancing. The implausible plotlines and over-the-top dance moves may sound cheesy to some, but it's this very formula that has entranced an entire nation, with around 10 million Indians going to the cinema every single day. "We have a bit of everything," said Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan.

Anand died in a London hotel Saturday night, his family said. The legendary Indian actor was known for his roles in a series of movies, including "Johnny Mera Naam," "Des Pardes" and "Hare Rama Hare Krishna. 18-year-old in India named world's shortest woman

By Aliza Kassim, CNN | December 16, 2011
Standing just over 2 feet tall, Jyoti Amge of Nagpur, India, was confirmed Friday as the world's shortest living woman. Guinness World Records, known as the global authority on record-breaking -- albeit odd -- achievements, flew to India on Amge's 18th birthday to take final measurements and confirm the new record. The title previously belonged to Bridgette Jordan, 22, of the United States, who measures 2 feet, 3 inches tall. Amge's birthday was celebrated at a party in Nagpur with cake and guests from her hometown as well as Guinness representatives from London.

Sex now selling in Bollywood

"House full" signs are lit up and long queues of moviegoers are waiting their turn to see the latest Bollywood film, "Khwaish," or "Desire. " Advertisements for "Desire" promise it will be racy, with 17 kisses and a string of bikini-clad girls, heralding a new age in mainstream Indian cinema. The show is sold out, and one theater owner says he is thrilled, given that these days theaters get only 30-40 percent occupancy. "Nowadays having full house is a rarity. So, one is obviously very happy," Regal cinema theatre owner Siddheshwar Dayal says.

Bachchan: Bollywood needs to adapt

Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan has told CNN that Indian cinema needs to move beyond traditional song-and-dance musicals amid increasing international competition in the Mumbai studios' domestic market. Bachchan, India's favorite film star and a regular presence in Bollywood productions for four decades, said that Indian audiences exposed to Western television and cinema expected Indian movies to be "at least on a par with is happening in other parts of the world." "Technology means the common man has access to the very best in entertainment from other parts of the world almost instantly," the 67-year-old told Connect the World.

Bollywood goes West

The much anticipated Bollywood musical, Bombay Dreams, has premiered in London to a standing ovation. Andrew Lloyd-Webber's lastest musical offering, which opened Wednesday, is a love story set against the backdrop of Bombay's famous film industry. Lloyd-Webber teamed up with Shekhar Kapur, director of the Oscar-nominated film Elizabeth, to devise the production, and compose. AR Rahman, the creative talent behind more than 50 Bollywood soundtracks, wrote the musical score.

Shortcuts: Become a Bollywood star

By Carlyle Laurie for CNN | October 25, 2006
If you think getting into Hollywood is "Mission Impossible" then why not try breaking into "Bollywood" -- the booming Indian film business -- instead. Here's how to get started. BollyWhat?: Before you rush out to your nearest travel agent to book your ticket to India, celebrity and acclaim, spend some time learning a little more about it. In a nutshell, Bollywood is, as the name suggests, India's answer to Hollywood, famous for its all-singing, all dancing spectaculars. Based in Mumbai, formerly Bombay, it's actually the world's biggest film industry, churning out more than 200 films a year for hundreds of millions of fans worldwide.

The King of Bollywood

Some movie actors are lauded for their performances on the silver screen, earning themselves respect and stardom. But few, if any, Western stars are worshipped in quite the way that Shah Rukh Khan is. In a film career spanning 16 years he has risen to become the most recognizable face of Indian cinema and the most watched movie star in the world. Shah Rukh Khan's life story is one which Bollywood scriptwriters would have been proud to have penned themselves. His journey into Indian cinema took in tragedy, romance, determination and luck.

Bollywood-An Overview of Bollywood

The world's movie capital is not Hollywood but Bollywood. Bollywood is the nickname for the Indian film industry located in Bombay (now known as Mumbai, though Mollywood hasn't quite caught on.)
Indians are in love with movies, even though most films follow a similar format called masala (the word for a collection of spices). Movies are three to four hours long (and include an intermission), include dozens of songs and dances (featuring 100 or so choreographed dancers), top stars, the story between the songs of boy meets girl (without any kissing or sexual contact), lots of action (though no bloodshed), and always - a happy ending.

Fourteen million Indians go to the movies on a daily basis (about 1.4% of the population of 1 billion) and pay the equivalent to the average Indian's day's wages (US $1-3) to see any of the over 800 films churned out by Bollywood each year. That's more than double the number of feature films produced in the United States.
Although American-made films have been edging into India, only the blockbuster Titanic has ever made India's top five list. One hundred and fifty U.S. films arrived in India in 1998. However, Indian films have become somewhat of an international obsession.

Bollywood films are being shown in American and British theaters on a more and more frequent basis. These theaters have become community foci for the South Asian communities around the world. Though separated by a vast distance from home, South Asians have found Bollywood films to be a great way of staying in touch with their culture and their fellow South Asians.

Since India is a country of sixteen official languages and a total of twenty-four languages spoken by over a million people each, some portions of the film industry are fragmented. While Mumbai (Bollywood) leads India in film production, its specialty lies with Hindi movies. Chennai (formerly Madras) produces films in Tamil and Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) is the Bengali movie capital. Neighboring Pakistan's Lahore calls itself Lollywood.

Bollywood's film production center is a government-owned studio facility known as "Film City" in the northern suburbs of Mumbai. Bollywood traces its start to 1911 when the first silent Indian feature film was released by D.P. Phalke. The industry boomed and today there are over 250 theaters in Mumbai alone.
The stars of Bollywood are very popular and highly paid, considering the budget of the films. The lead star in a film often receives as much as 40% of the US $2 million budget for the typical masala film. Stars may be in such high demand that they're working on ten films at once. Photographs of Bollywood stars grace shop windows and homes throughout the country.

Providing three to four hours of escapism is the primary objective of Bollywood and it's a recipe done well. Indian movies are becoming more and more popular around the world so watch for them in theaters and video stores near you.
